WHO’s Nutrition Week this year was from September 1st-7th. MSAI conducted a pan India event in 4 states across the country with cities like Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Belgavi, Chennai and Surat teams pitching in. A wide variety of activities were carried out during the week amongst primary school students, breastfeeding mothers and, adolescent girls and pregnant women to create awareness about the importance of nutrition and to prevent malnutrition amongst children.

Intake of calories, basic nutritional values of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Steps of hand-washing and promoted a hygienic lifestyle.

  • A health talk was given on the importance of proper and healthy diet. Various food items were kept on display and a question answer round was there for guessing them by the children. Our focus was also on the proper diet of pregnant ladies and also mothers of newborns.
  • Recorded weight, height and did a full head to toe examination, the patients with values not in normal range were counselled and asked for follow-up. A group counselling for complementary breastfeeding was conducted at every 2 hour interval on all the 3 days by all the participants in turns.
  • Collected data of the BMI of approx 2000 students which will be compiled but the team soon. We started with height and weight measurements and BMI calculation which were interpreted according to the WHO guidelines this was followed by haemoglobin estimation by comparator method.
  • The girls were then educated about nutrition and health hygiene and those with Hb less than 10 were given a referral chit.
  • Aquiz was organised and the correct answers were complimented with a gift.
  • Conducted health education seminar for ANC and PNC mothers.
